Stop Waiting on Vendors: Building Your Own Tools with AI Agents, Safely
Every district has a list of tools vendors will not build, or will build slowly, generically, and expensively. Peninsula School District decided to build them itself and open-source them for the field. A seven-person team has shipped AI Studio, an alternative to commercial K-12 AI platforms, and Lesson Lens, an AI instructional coaching app, with more tools built or in the pipeline. The district also opened its AI agents to every staff member to build lightweight, HTML-based tools for their own workflows. This is not vibecoding. It is AI Agentic Engineering: every tool goes through multiple code reviews and security audits and runs in secure containers, with self-healing code and automated error detection built in. That rigor makes it safe to give build power to non-engineers. You will leave with the district's framework, including the review process, security practices, and staff enablement model, plus a clear first step: pick one real workflow pain point and let an agent build a small tool for it.
