The Stakes of Quantum Education: Jobs, Knowledge, and Not Breaking the World

27 Jan 2027
CTE Leaders
Quantum computing is no longer five years away. Error-corrected quantum computers are reaching commercial customers, encryption experts are accelerating their timelines, and analysts project hundreds of thousands of quantum-related jobs, many not requiring a four-year degree. Yet almost none of our students have heard the word quantum in school. This round table discussion argues that K-12 educators, and CTE leaders especially, are building the pipeline for a workforce that will inherit, govern and use this technology. Together we will examine three gaps: a workforce gap in cybersecurity, IT and advanced manufacturing; a scientific literacy gap as quantum reshapes medicine, climate science, AI and encryption; and an ethical gap as technology outpaces educational frameworks. Leave able to explain superposition, entanglement and quantum error correction in plain language, along with free, vetted resources from organizations such as the National Q-12 Education Partnership, AAPT, QCaMP and Qubit by Qubit. You will also gain entry points for connecting quantum to existing CTE pathways, classroom activities that need no physics background, and ideas for partnering with national labs and universities.
