The Power of "AND": Engineering Permeable Pathways for College AND Career Readiness

For decades, public education has asked students to choose early between the academic rigor of a college track and the applied value of a career track. That artificial separation creates dead ends, forcing students to trade long-term options for immediate access. It's time to replace either/or tracking with the power of AND. In this workshop, a superintendent and a career and technical education leader draw on research into interorganizational relationships and system permeability to offer a practical blueprint for an educational system where learning moves fluidly with the student. Learn how to embed core academic rigor into technical application and engineer alignment across standards, crediting and cross-sector partnerships. Explore a tripartite system in which employers own the standard, schools own the credit and intermediaries coordinate, why seat-time schedules limit students and how competency options help, and how to keep technical learning from being trapped as elective credit so it opens doors to both college and career.
