The Loudest Classrooms: Building Thinking Classrooms and Critical Thinking in the Classroom

Picture an AI-integrated classroom and you might imagine a silent room of students isolated behind headphones. This round table discussion flips that narrative. Grounded in national classroom observations from the Silicon Schools Fund, it explores why the healthiest, highest-achieving AI classrooms are purposefully, productively loud. The core idea is simple: engagement was never the goal; thinking was. Together, participants will examine how Peter Liljedahl's Building Thinking Classrooms framework and intentional AI integration let technology handle baseline differentiation and formative feedback, freeing teachers to facilitate the human work of real thinking. You will learn to distinguish visible engagement from genuine cognitive engagement, pair structures such as visibly random groups, vertical non-permanent surfaces and thin-slicing tasks with AI tools that spark and capture reasoning, and use AI-generated formative data to spot misconceptions while students collaborate. Leave with a blueprint for classrooms where students vocalize, defend and iterate on their ideas, with examples spanning K-12 grade bands and math, ELA, science and social studies.
