The Exception to Screen Time: Mascots as a Learning Tool
Screen time is one of the most contested topics in K-12 education, but not all screen time is the same. Cognitive and media research points to one consistent exception: character-driven, mascot-anchored content. When students learn alongside a trusted character with a consistent identity, emotional presence and narrative arc, engagement deepens, retention improves and curiosity activates in ways passive content can't replicate. This session explores why mascots work and what separates meaningful screen time from mindless screen time. You will learn to distinguish passive from active digital engagement using a practical classroom framework and apply criteria for evaluating edtech content through the lens of character-anchored learning. District leaders and classroom educators alike will leave ready to make smarter technology decisions and to communicate the screen time exception clearly to parents, school boards, policymakers and community stakeholders.
