Classroom Leaders
Students can participate, collaborate, complete assignments, and appear enthusiastic while remaining disconnected from the learning. In this interactive session, you will explore the difference between being busy and being genuinely engaged, and why that distinction matters for intrinsic motivation, belonging, persistence, attendance, and collective efficacy. We will examine common classroom experiences through a new lens, uncover subtle ways instructional design can invite meaningful participation or unintentionally encourage compliance, and identify practical indicators of authentic engagement. You will leave ready to examine an upcoming lesson, find opportunities to strengthen agency, purpose, authenticity, and meaningful contribution, and make targeted adjustments without adding another initiative or technology tool. Coaches and leaders can use the same process for collaborative planning and instructional design conversations. The goal is a practical shift from asking how to get students engaged to asking what you are designing that gives students a reason to engage.
