Designing for the Overwhelmed Educator: PD That Respects Time, Capacity, and Burnout
Educators face unprecedented demands, yet professional learning often adds to the overwhelm instead of easing it. This round table discussion reframes PD through the lenses of Cognitive Load Theory, trauma-informed practice and human-centered design to create learning that honors educator capacity while still driving meaningful instructional change. Drawing on research from Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain and The Burnout Challenge, participants will examine how stress, time and cognitive overload affect adult learning and how to design with those realities in mind. Through practical frameworks and real-world examples, the conversation explores how to shift from one more thing to high-impact, low-burden learning that is flexible and sustainable at scale. You will leave with a clear framework for designing PD that aligns with educator capacity and a practical starting point: audit current offerings, cut low-impact components and redesign one session using a less but better approach that respects time and reduces burnout.
