Teaching With and About AI in the Middle School Mathematics Classroom

Many mathematics teachers are still figuring out what meaningful, responsible AI integration looks like in middle school. This poster session explores how AI can be taught both as a learning tool and as academic content within mathematics instruction. Drawing on three years of classroom implementation, discover practical ways to weave AI literacy, machine learning concepts, data science and AI-powered learning experiences into math class while keeping the focus on conceptual understanding, student thinking and student agency. Explore classroom examples including AI tutor chatbots, machine learning projects with tools such as Google Teachable Machine, and interdisciplinary lessons connecting mathematics, computer science and responsible AI practices. The session also tackles a key challenge: balancing student support with productive struggle and independent thinking so students use AI responsibly rather than becoming dependent on it.
