Redesigning Schools for Future Readiness

Future readiness is not created by adding new tools to old systems. It requires leaders to intentionally redesign the conditions that shape learning, work, culture, policy and innovation. Drawing on years of experience designing schools and digital learning models, and originally developed as a lightning talk for Stanford's Learning Accelerator, this session explores how leaders in any type of school model can move beyond surface-level innovation toward sustainable, student-centered impact. Examine how structures, policies, schedules, leadership behaviors, communication patterns and capacity decisions either enable powerful learning or quietly reinforce outdated models. Through real-world examples from K-12 systems, national education work and organizational leadership, explore the tensions between urgency and sustainability, clarity and complexity, innovation and capacity, and vision and implementation. You will leave with practical questions and decision-making lenses you can apply to strategic planning, cabinet conversations, AI and technology governance, policy review and professional learning design to identify barriers, clarify priorities and build learning and working conditions that support meaningful, lasting change.
