Make It Count: Turning Hands-On Projects into Real Learning

CTE Leaders
Hands-on learning is a cornerstone of CTE, but engagement alone doesn't guarantee meaningful learning. Too often, students complete projects successfully yet struggle to explain their thinking, adapt their designs or apply what they learned in new contexts. This round table discussion focuses on designing hands-on experiences that consistently produce minds-on learning. Using real examples from CTE, robotics and esports classrooms, explore small but powerful shifts in structure, questioning and workflow that move students from task completion to true understanding. Learn to distinguish activity-focused from learning-focused project structures, spot where student thinking breaks down and embed thinking moments before, during and after the build through quick decision checkpoints, iteration prompts and simple accountability measures, all without slowing momentum or adding grading load. Leave with ready-to-use prompts and a flexible framework you can apply to an existing project right away to increase rigor and ensure hands-on work leads to lasting learning.
