The Hidden Cost of Efficiency in Education

Schools often focus on making systems faster, smoother and more efficient, but not every educational process should be optimized for speed. This provocative workshop explores how excessive streamlining can unintentionally weaken opportunities for reflection, relationship-building, productive struggle and deeper learning. Examine the idea of productive friction as a design principle for education, and learn to distinguish between operational processes that benefit from efficiency and learning experiences that require challenge, connection and human complexity to be meaningful. Practice applying this lens by auditing school or classroom processes and sorting them into two domains: operational efficiency and learning plus belonging. Then identify where streamlining may be removing productive struggle or relational depth. Explore practical responses such as redesigning overly automated routines, reintroducing structured pauses for reflection, building collaborative tension into tasks and slowing key instructional moments to prioritize meaning-making over speed. Leaders will also gain a lens for PLCs and design teams to evaluate whether new initiatives optimize for efficiency at the expense of engagement and growth.
