AI tools can support instruction, but without intentional design they can unintentionally increase stress, cognitive overload and inequity for students impacted by trauma. This session explores how to use AI through a trauma-informed lens to create safer, more predictable and empowering learning environments. Grounded in trauma-informed practice and cognitive load theory, you will examine how AI can support executive functioning, reduce overwhelm and offer flexible pathways for engagement. You will evaluate common AI use cases, including feedback, tutoring and content generation, for potential emotional triggers, accessibility barriers, cognitive overload and cultural responsiveness. Through real-world classroom examples and actionable frameworks, you will learn to shift from reactive AI use to intentional, human-centered design that prioritizes well-being while maintaining rigor. You will leave with a practical trauma-informed AI design checklist you can apply to any tool or lesson, plus strategies for scaffolding executive functioning, providing flexible pacing and creating psychologically safer learning experiences.
