Banning AI Won’t Prepare Kids for an AI World. Neither Will Unintentional Adoption

The debate about AI in schools has narrowed to two positions: ban it or embrace it. Neither side is asking the question that actually matters. Restriction without literacy leaves students unprepared, and adoption without understanding leaves them dependent. This session makes the case for a third path, one that treats AI not as a threat to manage or a tool to deploy, but as a system students need to understand: how AI makes decisions, where it falls short and why that understanding changes how students engage with every subject and system they encounter. Explore why this foundation must be built in K-8, when thinking habits are formed, and what foundational AI and CS literacy actually looks like at that level. You will leave with a clear framework for distinguishing restriction-based, adoption-based and literacy-based responses to AI, strategies for making the case to skeptical parents, board members and community stakeholders, and a way to audit whether your policies are building student capability or simply managing exposure.
