Dr. Melissa Toohey is dedicated to culturally relevant pedagogy and promoting equity in computer science education. She supports teachers in implementing inclusive STEAM and computer science instruction. She designs learning experiences that highlight diverse identities, helping students see themselves as computer scientists.
Melissa’s commitment to equitable education stems from her experiences as a Taiwanese-American female in a predominantly white community. Her identity and culture were excluded from educational experiences, causing personal shame and cultural rejection. This underrepresentation persisted in computer science, teaching, and academia.
As a Literacy*AmeriCorps member, Melissa addressed the educational needs of newly arrived refugees in San Diego, inspiring her to earn her teaching credential and M.Ed from the University of California, San Diego. She taught Kindergarten and 1st grade, focusing on students from Title I and underrepresented backgrounds. Her achievements include creating the first elementary school computer science program in Watts, securing a $100,000 grant for iPads, and helping students discover their strengths.
Melissa has led teams to develop computer science curricula and support educators. Witnessing disparities in computer science education, she earned her Doctorate from UCLA’s Educational Leadership Program, focusing on equitable computer science implementation in elementary schools. (Go Bruins!)
