Ms. Karla Montalvo

Special Education Teacher, ECISD Transition Learning Center
United States
Karla Montalvo is a special education teacher in West Texas. Originally from Miami, Florida, she works with young adults in an 18+ transition program, where she focuses on helping students build the real-world skills they need to live more independently and confidently. She began her career as a paralegal, but realized she could make a bigger impact in the classroom. Early in her teaching journey, she adopted the belief that continues to guide her every day: assume abilities. She approaches every student with the mindset that they are capable of learning, growing, and reaching meaningful goals. Instead of focusing on what someone can’t do, she encourages educators to ask, “How can I support this student in doing more?” Karla has created a classroom space where it is safe to try, safe to fail, and students are always encouraged to try again. She supports them in taking small steps that lead to big changes, leveraging technology that allows students to practice daily living skills and prepare for community outings. She believes in setting high expectations, providing the right support, and celebrating every victory—because when educators believe in their students, they start to believe in themselves.
