Using Investigative Journalism to Understand the Community Impact of AI

January 17, 2025
EXPO HALL LEADERSHIP ROUND TABLES: BOOTH 3386
Library Leaders
The session's objective is to discuss the challenges and successes in representing marginalized voices as it relates to AI. We want all students to see themselves represented in the curriculum and the different technologies used to teach that curriculum, including AI. Texas public school librarian Jean Darnell and PBS NewsHour Classroom's Vic Pasquantonio share the good, the bad, and the ugly in regards to minority representation and AI. We ask the question: How can AI work for all students, so that they see positive signs of themselves in AI, and not racial stereotypes? We will incorporate some history of technology using PBS NewsHour's Journalism in Action interactive website and Ms. Darnell's own two-year+ professional and personal journey with AI in which she used investigative journalism to explain how to teach AI in a district that's banned AI and whether AI is enhancing or erasing student privacy/identity. We welcome educators to share their own successes and challenges with AI as it relates to representation.
