Learn how we, as EdTech leaders, can use the new national cybersecurity standards as a holistic approach to better manage and reduce cybersecurity risk. The new standards place the highest levels of leadership at the front and center rather than buried down in technology organizations. These standards use common education language to improve cybersecurity awareness and communication about the school system’s cybersecurity maturity level from the functional groups to the superintendent and boards of trustees. The standards, bolstered by a framework and rubric designed for education by the Cybersecurity Coalition, lend themselves to determining critical activities and developing strategic plans with quantifiable measures of progress. The new governance standards serve as a comprehensive guide for schools, encompassing the definition of the organizational context, the direction of risk management strategies, the authorization of cybersecurity roles, responsibilities, and authorities, the development of school system policies, the oversight of monitoring, and the evaluation of supply chain risk management. These standards incorporate a heightened leadership imperative with a new governance function focusing on how districts fund and determine cybersecurity decisions while maximizing the value of investment in technology spending and transforming the cybersecurity culture.
