In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, the influence of social media on mental health and well-being has become a critical concern for educators, parents, and policymakers. Drawing insights from prominent social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, whose works such as "The Righteous Mind"and "The Coddling of the American Mind"delve into the cultural and psychological impacts of social media, this session will explore effective strategies for fostering digital wellness among young people. Building on the principles outlined in "Teaching Digital Kindness"(Routledge, 2023), Andrew Marcinek will share his innovative approach to integrating digital health and wellness into school curricula. As a former teacher, instructional coach, and chief information officer, Marcinek advocates for a proactive and educational stance on technology use in schools rather than outright bans. By embedding digital health and wellness education into every grade level, Marcinek proposes that students can earn their "digital driver's license,"learning to navigate the online world responsibly and constructively. This approach aligns with Haidt's vision of a coalition of parents, educators, and social media companies working together to mitigate the negative impacts of technology.
