The tenor of current political discourse has created a challenging environment for teaching Civics and History. A recent study sponsored by the US DOE, says that “unsatisfactory knowledge and skills in civic engagement can lead to new generations of Americans not learning how to adequately address contentious and challenging issues.” Recognizing this, 39 states require at least one course in civics or government. The presentation will explore how to adapt methods, unpack data and analyze primary source content to build these essential skills. Our session will invite participants to exchange ideas using an award winning, research-based tool, Election Edge. Leveraging current research, attendees will learn: -How to approach the teaching of civics and current events in a non-partisan way -How to create meaningful cross curricular connections to deepen critical thinking skills -Tips for engaging students to civilly participate in discourse on complex issues We hope you can join us!
