January 16, 2025
EXPO HALL LEADERSHIP ROUND TABLES: BOOTH 3386
District Leaders
Robofun, in partnership with Teachers College, Columbia University is the recipient of a four-year ITEST grant from the National Science Foundation called Birds and Bots: Promoting learning and interest in mathematics for urban Black and Latinx children through culturally relevant daily robot coding activities. This talk will provide teachers and administrators information on the development and the implementation of our program. You will learn about the Finch Robot, that we are using to improve the learning and teaching of math. We are working in two public schools in Brooklyn New York where we are co-designing culturally relevant activities with 12 teachers in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. We are in year three of our four-year grant. During these three years, we have co-designed 150 (50 per grade) short coding activities that support New York State performance-based math lessons. We have also tested each activity in the classroom. In this talk we will speak about the process of developing culturally relevant activities and implementing them in six classrooms in school in Brooklyn New York.
