TABLE9: When Systems Fail: Lessons from the Front Lines of a Data Breach

January 12, 2026
EXPO: LEADERSHIP ROUND TABLES: BOOTH #1645
IT Leaders
In early November, the Liverpool Central School District experienced an internal data breach that compromised its student information system, including unauthorized changes to attendance and discipline records. This incident was traced back to a staff member who shared login credentials with a student, which were then further distributed, highlighting a critical lapse in digital security protocols. This session will provide an in-depth overview of the breach—its origin, scope, and the comprehensive remediation efforts that followed. Attendees will gain insight into the immediate actions taken to secure compromised accounts, restore system integrity, and conduct a full impact assessment. Beyond the technical response, the presentation will also explore the administrative and cultural challenges of reinforcing digital security in a school environment. Participants will leave with practical tools and strategies to proactively plan for and prevent similar incidents, including guidance on documentation, training, and policy enforcement. The session will also emphasize the importance of engaging district leadership in understanding the consequences of policy failures and ensuring sustained support for cybersecurity initiatives.
