TABLE7: Integrating STEAM Careers in Mathematics Courses: Making Math Relevant

January 13, 2026
W415 VALENCIA B&C
Classroom Leaders
How can we help students see the point of learning math? This session explores how integrating STEAM career examples into secondary math courses can make content more relevant and meaningful for students. Rather than relying on abstract word problems, participants will see how real-world careers, such as nurse, microbiologist, civil engineer, and digital designer, can be woven into Algebra 2 units through instructional examples, interactive practice, and context-based assessments. These connections help students see the value of mathematics in fields they may not have considered, sparking both interest and purpose. The presenter will share the structure and results of a research study that compares a traditional Algebra 2 unit to one enhanced with STEAM career integration. Participants will explore how the study measured student engagement and knowledge transfer and will review key findings and student feedback. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how to embed STEAM career relevance into their own courses using practical, classroom-ready strategies. This session is ideal for educators, curriculum designers, and technology coaches who want to enhance student motivation, personalize learning, and give students a better answer to the age-old question: “When will I ever use this?”
