AI may be the tool of the future, but its effectiveness for learning depends on how much it supports human relationships and actions in everyday classrooms. Maya Bialik and Peter Nilsson draw on their teaching, research, school leadership, ed-tech leadership, and performing arts experience to share insights on how AI can – and already does – support teachers. Their recently published book focuses on teachers first and technology second. It features both research on what works in teaching and learning and hard earned lessons from practice in their middle school and high school STEM and humanities classrooms. This session will provide concrete, usable tools and insights. It starts with key frames of reference to help understand why, when, and how we might use AI. It includes concrete tools and handouts for guiding responsible student use of AI. It offers insights from learning science to help teachers make decisions in their own classes for when and why to use AI – and when not to. And through it all, it celebrates and empowers teachers as the most important figures in successful schools.
