What knowledge and skills will today’s students need to thrive in 2040 and beyond? Kindergarteners this year will graduate high school in 2038. What will they need to know and be able to do to thrive in the future? What curriculum content do we need to update now to prepare them? This interactive workshop challenges educators to step outside the present and imagine the future. Together, we’ll trace how learning expectations have shifted over the past decade—what middle schoolers once thought they needed, how high schoolers prepared for college, and how rapidly post-secondary pathways are evolving. With uncertainty and curiosity as the guiding principle, participants will move beyond content silos and consider whole grade bands (PK–5, 6–8, 9–12) to craft essential questions that can drive future-focused curriculum design. Through facilitated breakout groups, you’ll collaborate to create, refine, and categorize essential questions that reflect the realities of tomorrow’s learners—where AI is just one tool among many. From CRISPR and genetic engineering to biomimicry, organoids, robotics, immersive realities, superintelligence, and quantum computing, tomorrow’s learners must navigate a convergence of biology, technology, and artificial intelligence that will redefine work, life, and innovation. We will debrief and synthesize our products, fueling continued dialogue and providing a foundation for future community conversations. Come ready to wonder and create the essential questions that will shape the next generation of learners!
