Recently, we’ve witnessed an evolution of instruction within schools. An emphasis on equity when working with students is more present than ever before. Teachers learn about a child’s culture, heritage, background, and experiences to ensure that each child is included and leaves our schools equipped with the skills they need to succeed in life. However, this same emphasis on equity in interactions with parents is limited. Educators are taught the value of family engagement, which some may even describe as common sense. However, the practice of high-quality family engagement is much less commonplace. Instead, parents often report a confusing, frustrating, and overwhelming experience as those who want to be engaged with their school community don’t know how or, worse, feel unwelcome. The rise of AI has the potential to help close this disparity as educators use this tool to connect with parents when, where, and how it will be most effective. In this interactive presentation, participants will focus on one tool, AI chatbots, to learn how to communicate with families in a way that demonstrates equity and the value of families in education.
