Formative Assessment Through Memes, Puzzles, and Games

January 15, 2025
EXPO HALL POSTERS AREA: BOOTH 2395
Classroom Leaders
Help all learners unlock mastery through memes, puzzles, and games. Come learn how to use memes as a powerful learning tool to assess understanding and drive deeper learning. Challenge your students to create puzzles and tell novel stories through activities designed for your classroom. Why memes? Memes are the shortest form of storytelling that humans have yet invented. It’s the tippy top of Bloom’s Taxonomy made expedient, which is why there’s no underestimating how influential memes are in shaping the lives of anyone growing up today. Teachers often use memes as bell ringers, but that’s just scratching the surface. The reason almost every subject matter has a meme community on the internet with membership in the tens to hundreds of thousands of people isn’t because they’re merely funny internet gags. It’s because they’re social puzzles and incredible learning devices hiding in plain sight. In this session, we will: -Illustrate how memes can be used as a powerful formative assessment tool and the fullest realization of Bloom’s Taxonomy -Discuss three types of learning memes and how to use them: Storytelling, Knowledge/Terms, and Camaraderie -Explore three unique meme activities that can be used for any class size and subject matter
