From EdTech to PedTech: Reconceptualising Digital Technology in Education

This presentation will provide a summary of six key findings from EdTech research and practice. It will then outline why the current EdTech approach has seen significantly more investment than impact - highlighted fundamental flaws in the EdTech approach. A new approach to thinking about digital technology in education - Pedagogical Technology (PedTech) -will be introduced. PedTech starts from one's values and beliefs, with a specific focus on your beliefs about how people learn (your pedagogical stance). It supports you in achieving alignment between those beliefs (your pedagogical stance) and your pedagogical practice. Why alignment between your pedagogical stance and practice is critical will be explained. You will then have the chance to explore your personal pedagogical stance - which of four dominant 'learning theories' you believe in - and the implications of that for how you use digital technology in supporting learning. Examples of how the same digital technology would be used differently depending upon your pedagogical stance will be described.
