Buyer Beware: How The EdTech Surveillance Industry Is Defrauding Schools and Hurting Our Kids

January 14, 2026

School Leaders
Based on the ACLU's groundbreaking report titled "Digital Dystopia: The Danger in Buying What the EdTech Surveillance Industry is Selling," the report's principal author will discuss how the student surveillance technologies that are being heavily marketed to schools as a way to keep students safe have an unproven and highly questionable safety record, hurt students (especially those already belonging to vulnerable populations), and too often take the place of more proven interventions. The detailed talk will shine a light on the EdTech Surveillance industry's dubious marketing practices and efficacy claims, and promote better, well-informed school decision making, including through the provision of actionable policies schools and lawmakers can adopt to help schools and their communities identify the best approaches to advancing their student safety objectives.
