Modernizing technology in K–12 schools requires more than just new devices—it demands strategic planning, cross-department collaboration, and creative funding. In this session, veteran Technology Director Dustin Cogan will share how Maquoketa Community School District is building a secure, instructionally aligned technology ecosystem while staying within the constraints of a public school budget. Learn how the district successfully implemented electronic door access, two-way radios, and digital signage through the COPS SVPP grant—and how those systems were integrated with VoIP and paging to improve communication and emergency response. Dustin will also walk through Maquoketa’s transition from outdated projectors to Google-integrated Newline interactive panels, supported in part by a USDA DLT grant currently in progress. The district’s evaluation of security-rated window upgrades will also be covered as part of broader building hardening efforts. This session focuses on practical steps that districts of all sizes can take to align technology with safety, instruction, and sustainability. From vendor management and grant writing to stakeholder buy-in and project execution, attendees will leave with actionable strategies for leading impactful infrastructure upgrades—no matter the size of their team or budget. Ideal for technology administrators, superintendents, and school leaders navigating complex demands with limited resources.
