Frances Haithcock

Frances Haithcock,
Chancellor of Public Schools, Florida Department of Education

The Chancellor will discuss Florida’s future directions, as well as give her perspective on National directions and how the nation’s 4th largest state can be a model -- and work with other states -- to build a National agenda for education.

Frances Haithcock

Frances Haithcock began her career in Florida almost 40 years ago as a classroom social studies teacher. Her dedication to students led to several administrative positions in Broward County, including principal, North Area Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent.

She left Florida in 2000 to work in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg, N.C., school system, where she served as Interim Superintendent and Associate Superintendent. She supported the adoption of the Bright Beginnings PreKindergarten Program, implemented a comprehensive reading and mathematics program and facilitated all professional development activities to support K-12 teachers in their efforts to ensure success for all students.

Chancellor Haithcock’s most recent work was with the College Board, where she served as Senior Director of EXCELerator Schools. The program is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and based on a mission of preparing all students for college. The project is now being implemented in five school districts across the country, including Duval and Hillsborough in Florida, and impacts nearly 45,000 young people.

Chancellor Haithcock’s passion to change students’ lives begins with improved alignment from postsecondary schooling to college and the workforce. She also advocates early reading initiatives and a strong accountability system.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina Greensboro and her master’s degree in Education from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. She earned her Doctorate of Education from the University of Miami.
